Dr. Luanne Eris Fose Revised July 30, 2004
6. The Background Image area allows you to browse for a different background image if
you wish to use one that you have created previously with a program such as Adobe
Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks. We won’t be using a background image in this
tutorial so you can just ignore it for now.
7. Set all the Margins to 0 pixels.
8. Now in the Category list of this dialog box, click on Links so that we can set the
default link properties.
9. Where it says Link font: let it stay at the default of (Same as page font).
10. For the Size: select 12 pixels.
11. Set the Link color: at #003300 (This is a dark green that matches some of the other
images on the Cal Poly template).
12. Set the Visited links: to be a blue color (hexidecimal #243A97). This will cause the
links to from green to blue if someone has already visited a particular link.
13. Set the Rollover link: to be a gold color (hexidecimal #CC9900) This will cause the link
to change to gold when the viewer places the mouse over the link.
14. Set the Active link: to be the same green as the link color: #003300. This is the color
that the link changes to briefly when the user selects a link. In this case, there would be
no change; it would remain green.
15. Next to the Underline style: select Always underline.
16. For now, we are going to skip working with the Headings. But this is where you could
set the font for all headings, the sizes, bold, italic, and color of the various headings
(tags <h1>- <h6>) if you desired.
17. Now in the Category list of this dialog box, select Title/Encoding.
18. In the text box next to Title: type “Homer J. Simpson – Cal Poly State University” This
will appear as the title for this page in the web browser. Note: You can also change a
document’s title in the Document Window by clicking in the Title field and pressing
Enter.
19. In the text box next to Encoding, make sure that it says Western (European) which is
the default.
20. Click on the Apply button and then click OK to close the Page Properties dialog box.
21. Now, if you click on the Design Panel Group and select the CSS Styles tab, you will see
that several CSS styles have been set for you. You can either edit them from this area or
re-open Modify > Page Properties to edit them.
A WORD ABOUT WEB-SAFE COLORS:
What is a web-safe or browser-safe color? Web-safe colors are the 216 colors supported by
browsers across different platforms (Mac and Windows). If you use the browser-safe colors
inside the Page Properties setting, you reduce the risk of having your colors look differently
than you intended them to when people view your web pages on different platforms and
browsers. In HTML, colors are expressed either as hexadecimal values (e.g., #FF0000) or as
color names (e.g., red, black, blue, etc.). All the colors in the color palettes used in
Dreamweaver are web-safe and in fact, any hexadecimal value that combines the pairs 00, 33,
66, 99, CC, or FF represents a web-safe color. You can use the eyedropper to select from these
colors in the palette. Go to
http://www.lynda.com/hexh.html
to view a web-safe colors chart
with hexadecimal and RGB references.
